Today’s students are learning many facts and skills, which weren’t taught to their parents’ generation. Science and technology have made obvious leaps in learning since I was a student, but psychological and sociological advances also shape many new thoughts and attitudes for the younger generation.
My education preceded genetic coding, computers, and the challenges of a global economy and racial diversity. As advanced as the younger generation’s education is, it, too, will grow outdated by future advances. That’s why education’s primary emphasis should be the development of
(1) critical reasoning skills,
(2) communication and
(3) social skills, and
(4) the ability to learn over a lifetime (life?long learning).
Although we live in the Information Age, the ability to store information should not be given highest priority. Rather, teaching the skill of analyzing and applying this infor-mation to tasks should be the educator’s goal.
Since scientific and technological data will become outdated, students must employ reasoning skills to understand the expanding boundaries of knowledge.
To do this, young people must be able to comprehend complex reading material, listen to, digest, and respond to sophisticated lectures and discussions.
They must be able to engage and interact with many different types of people and appreciate cultures from around the world. They must see this as learning, an opportunity to expand their world and make it more exciting and fulfilling.
Our modern, global economy offers many rewarding careers for those who are educated in such a way.
◆ Upper Managers (CEO’s, legal partners, superintendents) are paid large salaries because they can grasp the big picture of the organization; they’re not caught up in the minute details but, like the captain of an aircraft carrier, are focused on keeping the big ship moving forward. That means focusing on the future and taking advantage of trends that are likely to come.
◆ Middle Managers may not run the ship, but they must know the department or part of the organization they command and its inter?relationship with the other organizational components. They must balance little details with the big picture.
◆ Other Professionals, like doctors, engineers, lawyers, and educators may not have management responsibilities per se, but their ability to listen to, analyze, and respond to people and data is critical to their professional success.
