WASHINGTON, DC--Nancy Rubin, United States Ambassador to the UN Commission on Human Rights, Congressman lane Evans (D-IL) and Eli Rosenbaum, Direcotr of the United States Department of Justices Office of Special Investigations, on September 20 participated in the Year 2000 Remembrance: women of dignity and Honor, a special event honoring former Comfort Women around the globe. Comfort Women, as they were known, were young women and girls abducted, deceived and coerced from their homes in Korea, Taiwan, China, the Philippines and other coutnries during the 1930 s and 1940s by the Japanese Imperial Military. The military systematically enslaved these women in government-sanctioned rape camps known as comfort stations.
Ambassador Rubin welcomed the Remembrance attendees and Congressman Evans delivered the keynote address. Evans has been a longtime supporter of the Comfort Women cause. Eli Rosenbaum, known throughout the world for his work apprehending former criminals from Hitlers Nazi regime, also provided remarks.
Eleven rape camp survivors presented testimony of their tragic stories, and they were honored with commemorative plaques. The evening concluded with a reception featuring East Asian foods.

The Washignton Coalition for Comfort Women Issues, Inc. (WCCW) was created in December 1992 to further research and education in the Washington, DC area concerning crimes against Japanese rape camp victims of World War II. It is an independent, nonprofit, and non-partisan educational organization open to volunteers of every nationality and diverse points of view.
